Homemade Roti Recipe (Soft & Fluffy Indian Flatbread) 🍞🔥😋

Roti is a simple and delicious flatbread made with whole wheat flour, water, and a touch of oil. It pairs well with curries, stews, and grilled meats. Follow this step-by-step guide to make soft and authentic roti at home!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour (atta)
  • ¾ cup warm water (adjust as needed)
  • ½ teaspoon salt (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon oil or ghee (optional, for extra softness)
  • Extra flour for dusting
  • Butter or ghee for brushing (optional)

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt.
  2. Slowly add warm water, a little at a time, mixing with your hand or a spoon.
  3. Knead the dough for about 8–10 minutes until it becomes soft and smooth.
  4. Add 1 tablespoon of oil or ghee and knead for another minute.
  5. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 30 minutes (this helps make the roti softer).

Step 2: Rolling the Roti

  1. Divide the dough into small equal-sized balls (about the size of a golf ball).
  2. Lightly dust a rolling surface with flour.
  3. Roll out each ball into a thin, round disc (about 6–7 inches in diameter). Try to keep the thickness even.

Step 3: Cooking the Roti

  1. Heat a tawa, cast-iron skillet, or non-stick pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Place a rolled-out roti onto the hot pan. Cook for about 30–40 seconds until bubbles appear.
  3. Flip the roti and cook for another 30 seconds.
  4. Flip once more and press gently with a spatula to encourage it to puff up. Cook for another 10–15 seconds.
  5. Remove from the pan and brush with butter or ghee if desired.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve hot with curry, dal, or grilled meats.
  • Roti can also be used as a wrap for vegetables, meats, or cheese.
  • Store in a covered container to keep them soft.
