Homemade Roti Recipe (Soft & Fluffy Indian Flatbread) 🍞🔥😋
Roti is a simple and delicious flatbread made with whole wheat flour, water, and a touch of oil. It pairs well with curries, stews, and grilled meats. Follow this step-by-step guide to make soft and authentic roti at home!
Ingredients:
- 2 cups whole wheat flour (atta)
- ¾ cup warm water (adjust as needed)
- ½ teaspoon salt (optional)
- 1 tablespoon oil or ghee (optional, for extra softness)
- Extra flour for dusting
- Butter or ghee for brushing (optional)
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt.
- Slowly add warm water, a little at a time, mixing with your hand or a spoon.
- Knead the dough for about 8–10 minutes until it becomes soft and smooth.
- Add 1 tablespoon of oil or ghee and knead for another minute.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 30 minutes (this helps make the roti softer).
Step 2: Rolling the Roti
- Divide the dough into small equal-sized balls (about the size of a golf ball).
- Lightly dust a rolling surface with flour.
- Roll out each ball into a thin, round disc (about 6–7 inches in diameter). Try to keep the thickness even.
Step 3: Cooking the Roti
- Heat a tawa, cast-iron skillet, or non-stick pan over medium-high heat.
- Place a rolled-out roti onto the hot pan. Cook for about 30–40 seconds until bubbles appear.
- Flip the roti and cook for another 30 seconds.
- Flip once more and press gently with a spatula to encourage it to puff up. Cook for another 10–15 seconds.
- Remove from the pan and brush with butter or ghee if desired.
Serving Suggestions:
- Serve hot with curry, dal, or grilled meats.
- Roti can also be used as a wrap for vegetables, meats, or cheese.
- Store in a covered container to keep them soft.
