Authentic Australian Meat Pie Recipe 🥧🔥🍽️
One of the first mass-produced versions was made by Harry’s Café de Wheels, a famous pie cart in Sydney that helped popularize the dish across the country.
Ingredients
For the filling:

500g (1.1 lbs) beef mince (ground beef)

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup beef stock

2 tbsp tomato paste

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp soy sauce
-
1 tbsp flour (to thicken)

1 tbsp butter
-
½ tsp black pepper
-
½ tsp salt
For the pastry:

2 sheets puff pastry (for the top)

2 sheets shortcrust pastry (for the base)

1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the filling

Heat butter in a pan over medium heat. Add onions and garlic, sauté until soft.

Add the minced beef and cook until browned.

Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce.

Pour in beef stock and simmer for 10 minutes.

Mix flour with a small amount of water to form a paste, then stir into the beef mixture to thicken.

Simmer for another 5 minutes, then let the filling cool.
Step 2: Prepare the pastry

Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F).

Line pie tins or a muffin tray with shortcrust pastry, pressing it gently into the base.

Spoon the cooled meat filling into each pastry case.

Cover with a layer of puff pastry, pressing the edges to seal. Trim any excess.

Brush the top with egg wash.
Step 3: Bake the pies

Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown.

Remove from oven and let them cool slightly before serving.
Serving Suggestion

Serve hot with tomato sauce (ketchup) on top.
